What is a shipbroker ?
A shipbroker is an intermediary who coordinate and assist negotiation between its principals, whether directly or via another shipbroker; The ultimate decision remain with the principals. In chartering, the principals are charterer and shipowner; where as in sale and purchase, the principals are seller [shipowner] and buyer.
Such intermediary activities may include:
- Negotiating the freight/hire/price together with the contractual terms and conditions and finalising details of the contract for and on behalf and under the authorization of its principal.
- Follow up and monitor the contract on daily basis until its completion.
- To find a solution in case of dispute prior, during and post contract.
In return, a shipbroker will earn a commision as a reward of his work.
